Don’t drive too close to cyclists

I was thinking about the chap in his fancy convertible bmw who shot past me at 50mph ish, with about the same clearance as I would hope for passing me at 20 or 30mph and I think I’ve figured out a solution.

Ask drivers who act in this way to stand on a flat piece of road either facing forwards or backwards and drive a car towards them aiming to miss them by a foot and see how many of them step away.  I think 90%, any advances?

I’d go for a spike on your boots that extends about 6 inches from your leg. Anyone not giving proper clearance gets a r0b1-tag the length of his shiny vehicle.

Failing that, a small EMP to disable their car as they pass would also work. Ultimate driving machine indeed. Where’s your power steering now?

buddy, i don’t think removing their ability to steer is a great option whilst passing a cyclist too close at speed.

It drives me nuts every morning! People in this world have a serious personal space issue … that inculdes other cyclist who stop next to me at traffic lights with less than an inch between me and them! WHY??? All you have to is think … and maybe and take a little time and make some space for others.

I read in the new ‘London Paper’ last night that cyclists wearing helmets are more likely to be hit by cars as drivers assume they are ‘more experienced’ and so don’t take as much care when overtaking them. … So take off your helmet.

Fella, that’s a crazy response. I can fall off without even needing someone to pass me too close, what happens when I smack my head? That was averages too I bet so perhaps a few more were close but i bet there were still close calls to cyclists not wearing helmets so which would you rather have. an open head or not.

Personally, I tend to bend and weave, maybe let go of the handle bars and stretch my arms out to the side… that way drivers assume I’m drunk and steer clear, leaving me more room.

The London Paper is a joke. It’s a bunch of guys reading digg and pasting into InDesign. Come on.
