Who cares about Vista?

April 8th, 2006

Something occurred to me after reading this entry from mini-microsoft, entitled “Vista 2007. Fire the leadership now!”, where this snippet caught my attention:

“I was upset at missing the back-to-school market. Now we’re missing the holiday sales market. [snip] With the convergence of high-tech media, this holiday season would have been an explosive nodal point to get Vista out for a compounded effect.”

and then the always awesome Daring Fireball post entitled “Windows: The New Classic” where Gruber points out:

“And this points to the rather delicious conclusion that Apple is casting Windows, including Vista, as the new Classic. [snip] This is a move of supreme confidence — Apple relishes the comparison between Mac OS X and Windows XP, and Microsoft has shown enough of Vista via its widely-available beta seeds that Apple quite obviously isn’t afraid of that comparison, either.”

These articles point out two very important tidbits: the first points out how one of the key selling points of Vista is to manage the “digital lifestyle” (music players, cameras, videos, etc.). The second points out how Apple’s passive-aggressive attitude to Microsoft operating systems comes from a position of confidence.

Here’s my question: do we think that Apple would be confident enough in iPod to use that as a weapon against Vista?

“How” you say?

Delay a Vista-compatible version of iTunes.

This has to be the stupidest idea I’ve heard in a long time. This is the kind of bone-head thinking that proves a company has jumped the shark. It is why Sony can’t compete against the iPod. When a company gets so big with interests that diverge from customer; it makes an opportunity that other more nimble companies will exploit.

iTunes probably already works in vista beta.

Apple have really cornered the amateur photographers, music/iPod gang, home movies so they’re the top choice for those with a low to medium computer literacy. There is no suite for Windows based systems that does all those bits very well seamlessly and cheaply.

Windows does support a very wide range of devices though. I’m a little peeved that this Lexmark my lady got will only work with her old PC, restricts my options.
