Taken: 03/02/2006
Leo Laporte:
“We had a thirty thousand dollar bill with Dane, Sonic Net. He just saved our butt.
John C Dvorak:
How did that happen?
Leo: Oh you don’t want to know. This was that thing when i moved the RSS feed off feedburner without even thinking I stuck it on my..
John: Oh you were doing these huge feeds?
Leo: No the problem is with an RSS feed is I thought ‘they’re small they’re 30k [kilobytes] how bad could that be?’ the problem is first of all it wasn’t a server account it as just a free ISP server with just 10MB of space they give you for free. But the second problem was these Podcast clients don’t just hit it once, they hit it every five minutes. So it’s 30k every five minutes from a quarter of a million people.
John: Oh yeah that’d…..
Dane: You think there are that many people out there saying “Is there a new Podcast. Is there a new Podcast” they’re on the edge of their seats in an automated fashion.
John: Is this the Achilles heal of RSS
Leo: Fortunately Dane knows me and we’re friends
Dane: Well I saw the revenue reports come through.
Leo: [as Dane] “We made some money this month!!”
Dane: …so I see Leo’s account
John: 28 thousand dollars!!!!
Dane: Actually you’d be surprised what we could clear on his credit card..
Leo: This is two months; this only took two months it was like 15 a month.
Dane: So we just returned it and called Leo and said “Leo, what’s up?!!”
Leo: So kids just a word of warning; if you’ve got a little setting that turns off the amount of downloads at a certain point………….
